Our College
NSS College, Nilamel (Reaccredited by NAAC with B++ grade in 2nd Cycle of Accreditation), affiliated to the University of Kerala, is one of the aided Arts and Science colleges under the management of Nair Service Society founded by Bharatha Kesari Sri. Mannath Padmanabhan. Ever since its inception in 1964, the college has been synonymous with excellence in academic activities, service to the community through extension activities, research and best practices. The college works with the vision, "quality education through academic excellence, skill development and character formation" and is vowed to produce socially-committed citizens. It has been a beacon of hope to thousands of aspirants to university education.
Situated on a lovely hummock on the sprawling 34 acres by the side of the M.C Road not far from the historic Jadayu Rock (Chadayamangalam) mentioned in the epic, Ramayana, the college provides a quiet ambience for teaching and learning activities. It offers eleven First Degree Programmes and two Post-graduate Programmes. First Degree Programmes are offered in English, Malayalam, Economics, History, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Bio-Chemistry and Commerce. Post-graduate Programmes are offered in Malayalam and Commerce. Admission to all programmes is as per the university norms. Teaching learning activities are carried out with a view to meet the objectives and desired outcome.
The College Council advises the principal in academic and administrative matters. All academic activities of the college are planned by the Planning Board and monitored and evaluated by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell. The college Office under the leadership of office superintendent looks after the general administration of the college. The PTA helps to maintain a rapport between all stakeholders. Alumni association is a source of strength for the college. Seminars, workshops, exhibitions and invited talks galore. They provide the students with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge.
Committees formed for different activities provide the much needed support to the whole gamut of curriculum transactions. The Academic committee and Research Committee monitor teaching, learning and research activities. Calendar committee, Discipline Committee, Purchase committee, Canteen Committee, Website committee work in unison for the welfare of the student community. Grievance Redressal Cell and Anti-ragging Cell look into the complaints raised by the students. Career Guidance and Placement Cell serves the students by preparing them for placements. Women's Cell works for the empowerment of girl students. The efforts of the women's clubs have made the campus gender free.
Club life is part of the curriculum. It helps the students in showcasing their talents. Clubs like Community and Health club, Debate and Quiz Club, Nature and Eco Club, Media Club, Sports Club, Science Club, Theatre Club, Literary Club, ED Club, Environmental Club lead the students in creating awareness in their respective areas. Planning Forum acquaints the students with the nuances of planning. Club activities have made the campus very vibrant.
The college union functions in the college with the objective of training students of the college in the duties, responsibilities and rights of citizenship and to promote opportunities for the development of character, leadership, efficiency, knowledge and spirit of service. It also encourages sports, arts and other cultural, educational and recreational activities that are incidental and conducive to the above objects. With the objectives developing in the student leadership qualities, spirit of adventure and preparing them to serve the society and the nation, two units of NCC function in the college. NCC also motivates the students to join armed forces. NSS units of the college work to create social awareness among the students. ASAP, a student support programme which concentrates on soft skill training and IT, is another attraction of the college. New Initiatives of Higher Education Department, Walk with the Scholar and Scholar Support Programme motivate the students to emerge in life.
An automated well-stacked library with a browsing facility is the greatest attraction of the college. The college also runs innovative programmes like finishing School for the outgoing students. The physical Education Department grooms sports teams and prepares them for University, State and National level competitions. Our teams have won many accolades. The college has also set up a computer centre and a gymnasium. In short, the college can boast of all facilities to serve the student community.
